Hi everyone. I started playing this game again, having remembered it from my childhood back when it came out. The only problem I'm running into is that I literally cannot finish a race - as in 32 retirements in 16 races. I tired a second season, and could only get finishes by simming the race which kind of defeats the point. The retirements were for a variety of reasons - stalling, accidents, engines, spins - no discernible pattern at all. I tried upgrading things, I tried better drivers, I tried lots of full race distance tests, I had good setups - all sorts of things. I even tried cheating the internal parts to the highest level, and still got nothing.
What can I do to get the cars running normally - however good or bad a car is, it should still finish some races!

weird, maybe lack of testing, low quality for spare part and fuel? wrong setup or maybe you touched the slider for driver pace?

I changed to the highest quality parts, and the 2nd level fuel was correct for my engine. This was on the default sliders, and with a setup that was usually good enough for pole and almost all comments "can't be improved". It's frustrating.
If I move any of the sliders above 50% with mediocre drivers, they spin and crash within a lap. Quite sad considering if they are in a wet qualifying session and can't push the tyres.

Are you playing a modded version of GPM2? Or is it just the original version?
It could be your staff if they are lowly rated that can cause problems. Another thing I can think of is sometimes at least from my experience is once you progress to the next season and make the new car chassis the problems will either improve or disappear completely.

Just the original. Oh well.

The original version for me has always been a bit buggy like that it's really difficult to finish a race it's best to play a modded version of GPM2 that has the game patched with some bugs fixed.

Which version? There seem a lot of mods and things but it's not so simple. Is there one that patches the main problems and so on?
Thanks.

The 1996 Mod is a bit better. Still having a lot of "spun off" and "electrical" retirements. 3 finishes out of 18 possible so far with the Tyrrells. Just frustrating, the cars qualify well (often top 10) have no race pace and rarely make it into the final third of the race. One 3rd place so far with a couple outside the top 10. Got the 3rd by qualifying well and back to back (6-7) running one car as a brake on a 1 stop and the other on a faster strategy. A few retirements and we ended up 3rd (and DNF for the 1 stop car). Also, weirdly, Schumacher sucks and Alesi is pretty dominant.
I've been trawling through the Abandonia forums - apparently the retirement issue is pretty common and the main reason people give up with the game. There's some thinking that it's linked to tyre temperatures and pressures, through there's no way I can see of getting them right for long stints bar re-running races multiple times. Driver feedback on pressure is weak.

The problem with most mods: They only use patch 1.02 and not 1.02b.
1.02b fixes the eletrical retirement bug. In vanilla and 1.02 your electrical system had to be the same level as your driving aids. For example: Semi automatic gears are on level 5 - the quality of your electrical system has to be at least 50.% Otherwise your car will crash everytime with electrical failure. Even if your driver aids are not even active, as long as they are developed and higher than your electrical system, you will crash. With patch 1.02b this problem is fixed. You can find your version if you click help -> about in the menu at the top
other tips: -Testing every car for car improvements after you upgraded a component. If your money allows you to do: Before every race -look for high stamina + experienced drivers (5 stars at best) -only drive with a perfect setup. If the driver is uncomfortable, they are more likely to crash -change all worn parts after every race -don't touch the sliders
Sometimes drivers just spin off, thats the way it is.

yeah, you are right of course. But its the electrical system that fails and has to be replaced isn't it?

Have you ever read the game manual? It's mandatory since any mistake is punish you real hard. Theres a lot of main intel there. Some things that are really important to know: + Setup need to be perfect on races to avoid spun off. Imperfect setus will make even the most experienced and best drivers to spun off. + You need to test. A Lot. When I say a lot, I mean A LOT. Really a lot. Specially on new chassis (begin of the game too). + Engine Temperature is very importante too to avoid spun off or Engine Failures. + EMS bug on non 1.02b version (people are saying electrical, i don't remember very well if it's EMS or Electrical System). + Dont move any slider above 50% never! Even the best driver on the game will have accident. You can change from 0% to 50%.

Have just discovered that you can be stitched up by the FIA as well. I'm on Season 10, and the FIA have banned all gearboxes better than STK and transmissions better than Univers A.
As soon as I start a race, the Gearbox is rated "Not Good" and both cars break down in every race with Gearbox failures - this is with both 6 and 7 gears! Had a similar problem with the engines as the FIA had banned all airboxes better than Closed - this I got round by using vanes. The only way I can complete races is to skip them and let the computer calculate a result. Sometimes I REALLY hate the FIA!

i had the problem once or twice.FIA had decreased the highest level of gearboxes but in the middle of the season so i was able to save the gained advantage in the first half of the season despite my cars had retired often.in season 9 of 1994 mod, I also had problems due to the fact that the maximum allowed level of the gearbox did not match my engine (Renault). I skipped races and somehow managed to win the championship. But the next year I signed a contract for a less powerful engine (Ford Zetek) and could already watch the races since the drivers had no mechanical problems.
